Collection of 3 Antique Scottish Carpet Rug Balls, Late 19th Century collectibles.
3 Carpet balls in red, green & brown plaid. A storied game dating back Centuries, Carpet Ball is similar to Bocci Ball. An indoor game, a set of pins are set up in a hallway, each player is given a set of balls to knock the pins down. The balls are decorated in different colors & designs to differentiate each player. Since Victorian era - in Scottish mansions they were usually kept in a large wooden box inside the door in a hallway and in long winter days- offered warmer amusements for the household indoors. The balls were usually about 3” diameter. Made with fired clay & decorated with plaids, florals, stars etc. Popular in 1870-80s. Today play or use as decor in a bowl.
Some wear consistent with age/use, general good condition with scuffs.
