Here is a conundrum. It is a shield nickel that grades out at VF on coin snap. Unfortunately there is a hole drilled through the date, but it clearly shows that the last number was a 1.
Shield nickels were minted between 1866 and 1883 which make this coin’s possibilities an 1871 or an 1881.
An 1871 VF is valued at $225
An 1881 VF is valued at $510
You will find a lot of coins holed out during that era as pockets were optional in pants. Coins were either carried in a pouch or strung together with a piece of raw hide.
This is too rare of a coin to not share it with a true collector so it is priced to sell.
