Today I have an Early Mexican 900 Silver Sombrero Trinket or Jewelry Tray / Dish w Floral Snake Motif
The hat is 4 1/2" diameter and 2" high. It weighs 76.2 grams Excellent condition
These sombrero or Mexican hat dishes or trays have been a popular tourist item for almost a century. This one has a very early embossed eagle mark and an intaglio 0900 mark; probably 1940s or earlier
Around the brim are flowers and leaves in repousse against a textured background. The eagle carrying off a snake, draped over the top of the sombrero, is hand incised
There is a rope border around the brim and a laid-on braided silver rope acts as a hat band. MEXICO is stamped on the front of the hat and beneath that are the hallmarks
Repoussé or repoussage is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hand-hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.
